PSAT Test Preparation
Students who take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) do so to be considered for the National Merit Scholarship Program. This two-hour test is primarily multiple-choice with 10 fill-in-the-blank math questions. The test measures student critical thinking, math, and writing skills. The critical thinking section requires students to complete sentences accurately based on vocabulary and sentence structure. They must also read a passage and answer questions pertaining to it.
The math section measures basic number functions, algebra and geometry knowledge, and data analysis skills. Students should have completed at least Algebra 1 prior to taking the PSAT. Writing skills are determined through multiple-choice questions that require students to identify sentence errors as well as improve sentences and paragraphs. Students are not required to complete a writing sample for this exam.
